New top-level domains

by Andris Dinsbergs. Average Reading Time: about a minute.

In January 2012, new Internet real estate will be introduced to allow for domain names to shift beyond the traditional .com to .anything. This dramatic shift will enable businesses, entrepreneurs and governments to apply for and acquire their own Top-Level Domain similar to .com, .net or .org.

Known as the new Top-Level Domain Program, and facilitated by the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN), this revolutionary shift will allow for hundreds of new domain extensions to be introduced into the daily navigational behaviours of businesses and consumers across the world.

With global Internet penetration figures topping 2.1 billion users, New Top-Level Domains (TLDs) represent the greatest opportunity for innovation the Internet has seen since its creation, delivering longterm financial benefits for digital visionaries looking to take advantage of the next phase of Internet expansion.

Applications for new Top-Level Domains will be taken within three specific market segments:

  • Brand Names – .nike or .ibm
  • Generic Words – .music or .web
  • Geographic Locations – .sydney or .nyc

This change will reduce the reliance on over-populated TLDs such as .com, .net or .org and once again create the freedom of choice within the domain name marketplace.

A new wave of domain name opportunity is about to sweep through the Internet. Are you prepared?
